Summary Description

Responsible for supervision of all purchasing functions for purchasing of materials, tools, equipment, inventory and supplies for Tri-M.  Negotiates with suppliers to obtain best possible prices.  Supervises activities of Purchasing Agents, Buyers, Warehouse Employees, and Equipment Manager, including salary and performance reviews.  Provides purchasing/material management support functions for all internal operating groups at all locations.

Duties and Responsibilities

 Essential Functions:

  • Adheres to Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
  • Develops objectives, goals and strategies for operation of the Purchasing Department.
  • Coordinates with the Chief Estimator in developing appropriate policies and procedures to achieve efficient and cost-effective purchasing of materials, equipment and tools.
  • Ensures that purchases are expedited and excess material is returned.
  • Ensures consistent purchasing policies, procedures, and forms at all Tri-M locations.
  • Supervises Purchasing, Warehouse and Equipment employees which includes salary and performance reviews.
  • Assures that proper procedures and methods are in place to achieve efficient and cost-effective control of inventory.
  • Assists with purchasing materials, tools, equipment, and supplies needed to complete field projects, as well as support office functions and other procurement needs such as:
  • Establishing purchases priorities.
  • Assuring accuracy and reasonableness of requisitions and invoices.
  • Negotiating purchase, availability and price of materials which requires at least three quotes.
  • Assuring orders are expedited and Open Commitments are closed timely.
  • Maintains  a positive relationship with suppliers’ representatives and negotiates all blanket purchase orders and discount terms in conjunction with the CFO.
  • Ensures Tri-M maximizes all opportunities under Tri-M’ national purchasing agreements and vendors.
  • Continually evaluates all procedures in area of responsibility in order to modify procedures and implement changes to improve efficiency and increase processing speed.
  • Oversees the management of Tri-M’s Fleet, Inventory and Warehouse operations.

Job Qualifications 

Skills/Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma; 2 years post high school education and training
  • Minimum of 6 years experience in electrical purchasing or sales, or 8 years experience in other purchasing areas
  • Computer knowledge and applications required
  • Working knowledge of materials, tools and equipment used in electrical construction business
  • Ability to manage people including performance and salary reviews
  • Above average negotiating skills
  • Above average math skills
  • Good human relations skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to prioritize work, handle pressure and meet deadlines
  • Confident, decisive, self-motivated, stable personality

Physical Requirements:

  • Working up to 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10-hour shifts.
  • Vision adequate for daily and consistent computer use and reading.
  • Sitting 6 to 8 hours/day.
  • Lifting weights of 0 to 30 lbs. from floor to above shoulders.
  • Repetitive use of hands for writing, typing, data entry.
  • Hearing adequate for phone use.
